Mahogany Hammock

Share: f 𝕏
Mahogany Hammock is a distinctive ecological feature in Everglades National Park — a raised, forested island of tropical hardwood trees that stands in contrast to the surrounding open marsh. The word "hammock" in Florida refers to these elevated tree islands where well-drained conditions support a dense, multi-layered forest. This hammock is named for the West Indian mahogany trees at its heart, which grow to impressive size in the sheltered interior. The dense canopy creates a microclimate noticeably cooler and shadier than the open Everglades around it, making a visit here feel like stepping into a different ecosystem entirely.
